Very old houses from the "bush"
These old houses were the ones of the European settlers in the XIX century and in the first half of XXth Century. They were poor and living mostly from their crops and cattle.
They alla had a veranda protecting walls from the sunheat and insuring coolness. Walls were made of clay, timber or stones for the richest.
Normandon house at the Caillou (Ouégoa).
This very old house was typical of the bush housing. Its veranda protected its walls from the sun ensuring a cool temperature inside. Its walls were made of clay. Originally it had an earth floor. This house was still used for cooking and as an eating place in the sixties. Unfortunatly it is nearly ruined, although it should be maintained as a testimony of the early colonial time; there are not many left.
Another house probably of the XIXth century. Although small it has a rather sophisticated roof and stones walls. It is also nearly ruined, unfortunatly.
