Biodiversity in New Caledonia : Land animals, fish and flora

requin

There are many sharks in the lagoon. They are impressive but they are not usually aggressive. Accidents are few and are generally related to lack of caution.

The Gray reef shark is the most frequent one. It has a 1 to 2 m length and a black line at the end of its tail. It is seldom aggressive. The Blacktip reef shark is found also around reefs and is not aggressive too. The Tawny nurse shark which can reach a 3 metre length and the Sicklefin lemon shark are not dangerous unless provoked.

The big sharks of bad fame are much scarcer and sufficiently shy for not showing much. These are mostly ocean sharks which may enter the lagoon as does the Tiger shark which can reach a 4 to 5 metre length. Hammerheads gather more often in large groups inside the lagoon. The mako shark ( 3 to 4 m) can be found sometimes in the reef pass. The big White pointer, infamous since the movie "Jaws", inhabits the ocean deep waters. Only occasionally it may wander in a barrier reef pass or even enter the lagoon.
