Cyathea : the tall fern-tree of New-Caledonia

The tallest fern-tree in New-Caledonia is Cyathea intermedia, it can reach a height of 30 m and it is the tallest known in the world with perhaps another Cyathea in Vanuatu (this remaining to be confirmed).

C. intermedia is endemic. They grow often on acid soils. Growth rate reaches 1 m per year on the East Coast, generally in forest clearings or unused lands. There is also a Cyathea novae-caledoniae .
